Soulbound and Lantern of Death

Soulbound is an item protection feature against loss upon death. Lantern of Death is a consumable item that you need both for binding and for later retrieving the item.

The system is managed by the NPC Soul Guide.

In brief

  1. You craft the Lantern of Death (Tinkering).
  2. You hand the lantern over to the Soul Guide and pay gold.
  3. The marked item becomes soul bound - upon death, it does not drop as loot, but goes into a private storage.
  4. You later retrieve the item for gold + another lantern (cheaper at your own corpse).

Lantern of Death

The lantern does not turn off like an aura upon death. It is a catalyst that gets consumed:

  • when binding the item at the Soul Guide
  • 1× for each item upon recovery

Crafting

  • Skill: Tinkering
  • Category: Misc I
  • Variant according to metal (Iron, Copper, Tin, Zinc, Silver, Gold, Lead, Chlorite, Hieronite, Gorinite, Sangvine, Arite, Mithril) - functionally identical

NPC The Soul Guide

1. You give him the Lantern of Death = The bind is initiated

2. You say hi / hello / greet = Opens recovery of all stored soulbound items for full price

How to do soulbind

  1. Have a Lantern of Death and enough gold (backpack or bank) in your backpack.
  2. Give the lantern to the Soul Guide.
  3. Select the item you want to protect.
  4. Confirm the price (gold + lantern).

Upon success: the item is soul bound - only you can equip it and upon death it awaits recovery.

What can be soulbind

It must be a magical / set / socketable item and one of the types:

  • weapons
  • armor
  • jewelry
  • charms
  • spellbook
  • bell bandolier

Important: soulbound does not lock the item in the inventory. Someone can receive it via trade, but cannot wear it. The bind is not canceled after recovery — the item remains soulbound.

Bank

Items in the bank do not move to the soulbound storage upon death. Protected are items in equipment, backpack, and druid charm bag. However, lanterns in the bank can be used during recovery.

What happen on death

Classic death:

  1. Soulbound items are removed.
  2. They are moved to your private storage.
  3. On the corpse, gold = 50% of the sum of bind prices of these items remains (instead of lootable gear).

Looters therefore do not get your soulbound items - only a part of their value in gold.

Hardcore death

Upon a hardcore death, soulbound items are destroyed. Recovery is not possible.

Carve body

You cannot carve your own corpse while you have unrecovered soulbound items for it.

Recovery

For each recovered item you need:

  • gold (full or half price)
  • 1× Lantern of Death (backpack or bank)

You can recover them one by one, or all at once (Pay & Withdraw All).

At your own corpse (discount)

Opening your own corpse opens the recovery gump with a 50% discount (price). Only items from this death will be displayed.

At Soul Guide (full price)

Greeting (hi/hello/greet) opens recovery of all stored items for 100% price.

Here you can also permanently destroy (Delete) the item — confirmation required, irreversible. There is no delete option at the corpse.

Compare

Path Price Lantern Note
Own corpse 50% 1× / item Only items from that death
Soul Guide 100% 1× / item All stored; option to delete

After recovery, the item goes into the backpack and remains soulbound.

Prices

The bind price (and subsequent recovery) depends on the item's required level:

  • minimum (low level): 5,000 gp
  • maximum (required level ≥ 32): 250,000 gp
  • in between, it scales according to the level (exponentially)

The same stored price is used for recovery; at the corpse, half is taken.

Gold is paid from the backpack or alternatively from the bank.

Tip for player

  • Prepare lanterns in advance for every death (1 for each soulbound item you want to retrieve).
  • Recovery is cheapest at your own corpse.
  • Unique items cannot be bound.
  • Hardcore = permanent loss of soulbound gear.

One-sentence summary

You consume a Lantern of Death at the Soul Guide to mark an item as soulbound, and again (along with gold) to retrieve it from storage after death - the soulbound status keeps the item out of loot and binds the equipment to the owner.
